American Idol: Behind The Scenes

There are many fascinating facts about American Idol that will interest anyone who has ever dared to dive into this pious show. Although most people believe that the show is all about excitement and fun, it is not always clear what the contestants go through. This includes rehearsals, contracts to sign, and the details of being away from home for so long. The American Idol experience has left many potential singers in tears, but only 7 have come out victorious.

Most people don’t realize that the majority of contestants never actually see the judges after they audition. Simon would really sit through millions upon millions of auditions, do you think? It would be amazing to see this happen. However, the judges have very limited time and contestants must audition in each city. After they pass this stage, they can go on to audition with the judges. It is at this point that some unique individuals are permitted through to give great entertainment during the television auditions.

Another thing that contestants don’t know is that they spend very little time sleeping once they arrive in Hollywood. They also spend very little time sightseeing and they spend most of their waking hours either auditioning or rehearsing. This is, I think, intended to show which contestants can go without sleep while still maintaining their voices. This part of the show has seen many contestants crash and burn. While it may seem cruel, it could be used as a guide for what a tour schedule might look like.

Another surprise is that contestants will have to choose songs from preselected playlists. Although many feel this is unfair, it is probably one of few protections that American Idol offers in an era filled with lawyers and loopholes. They can ensure that they don’t infringe on the copyright of any other artist by restricting the song selection to songs they have approved.

Many contestants will be surprised at the contract they must sign. American Idol is known for not allowing contestants talk to the media until they have been voted off. This contract goes a little further. Contestants can’t sign with another recording company for at least three months after the finale. Although this can seem like a big drain on contestants, it is usually non-negotiable. If the show gives permission in writing, contestants who have been booted can sign with a new contract. It is sometimes difficult to get approval, but it is necessary if one wants to hit the album beat while the show is fresh in their minds.

You can see that the show is not all fun and games. The hard work required to win the show is well worth it for those who are successful. It is possible to make a career out of contestants, regardless of how far they go on the show. However, it is worth it to put in the effort to watch what happens.
